The Vice President of Membership is a senior executive responsible for overseeing the full membership lifecycle – from acquisition and onboarding to engagement, renewal, and advancement – while ensuring alignment with the organization’s mission, revenue goals, and long-term strategic plan. As a member of the executive leadership team, the VP of Membership drives member-centric innovation, leverages data to inform decision-making, and collaborates cross-functionally to deliver compelling member value and a differentiated member experience. The role carries direct responsibility for a significant portion of the organization’s earned revenue and is critical to sustaining organizational impact and financial health.

This position can be remote, hybrid, or in office. Our office location options are Austin, Texas National Headquarters and Washington D.C. Government Affairs (Arlington, Virginia).
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
You are expected to perform the following essential responsibilities of the position with reasonable accommodation. The position may include other responsibilities as assigned.
Oversees all activities related to planning, implementation, and evaluation of membership initiatives to maximize results.
Stays abreast of external membership retention and recruitment best practices to drive internal strategies and results.
Collaborates closely with colleagues in other departments to develop and facilitate the creation and delivery of membership value for each segment. Develops and executes promotional tactics that drive awareness of membership benefits to increase recruitment and retention.
Partners with Communications & Marketing to define membership segments, develop targeted lead strategies, and execute integrated, data-driven campaigns that drive member acquisition and retention.
Works within the Salesforce Association Management System (AMS) to help ensure data governance best practices and effective use of the system.
Evaluates and sunsets underperforming offerings based on data and strategic fit.
Serves on cross-functional teams as project owner, stakeholder, or subject matter expert.
Defines and manages Membership operations, including the oversight of a tier 1 customer service department.
Manages multiple affinity partners.
Assists staff in resolving operational and escalated member issues.
Leads staff for the International Committee that is focused on international members recruitment and the History Committee.
Fosters a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.
Sets clear goals, performance metrics, and professional development plans for team members.
Experience
Required:
Ten (10) or more years of progressive leadership experience in a membership role for a nonprofit organization with experience directly related to the essential responsibilities of this position.
A minimum of five (5) or more years of recent experience in a senior membership leadership role.
Seven (7) or more years of experience supervising employees.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Required:
Proficient in using and managing Association Management Systems, preferably in relation to Salesforce, and has an advanced understanding of how to use software for analytics tracking, decision making, and reporting.
Experience with governance structures and staffing committees.
Experience with digital transformation and member experience innovation.
Proven leadership and emotional intelligence skills.
Highly purpose and results oriented with ability to drive strategic outcomes, build consensus, and navigate complex situations.
Strong customer service orientation to interact and problem-solve with members and promote the association in a positive, professional manner.

Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, Teams).
