The Wisconsin Dental Association is seeking to hire a full-time Executive Director; current Executive Director is retiring after 20 years and is willing to help with the transition. The position is based out of the WDA’s headquarters office (6737 W. Washington St, Ste 2360) in Milwaukee, WI.
Founded in 1870, the WDA represents over 3,100 member dentists across the state and is the leading voice for dentistry in Wisconsin. The WDA has 24 local dental societies around the state and is a constituent of the American Dental Association. The WDA has a team of 14 staff and an annual operating budget of approximately $2.8 million.
The WDA promotes and advances the practice of dentistry across the state through its goals to Advocate, Educate, Empower and Serve:
- Advocate for public policy on oral health care. WDA will be the advocate for quality health care in all public policy issues.
- Educate the public on oral health and delivery of care. WDA will be recognized as the public’s authoritative source on oral health care information.
- Empower its members and staff for organizational and member success.
- Serve our members. WDA will provide programs and services that its members agree provide them with real value.
The Executive Director is responsible for managing the day-to-day affairs of the Association under the oversight of the Board of Trustees, which is comprised of members representing the local dental societies. The Executive Director leads a talented team to guide the WDA’s mission to advance the interests of WDA members and the dental profession by promoting professional excellence and quality oral health care to the public.
The Executive Director works with the Board of Trustees to develop strategic and operational plans and initiatives; formulate and recommend policies and programs that will further the objectives of the Association. The Executive Director serves as the primary liaison between the Board and the staff and attends meetings of the Board, Executive Committee and other committees as designated. The Executive Director is responsible for the overall management of the programs, activities and fiscal affairs of the Association, and directs either directly or through subordinate managers all approved programs and activities of the staff. The Executive Director develops annual program budgets with approval of the Board and ensures that the physical and financial assets of the Association are safeguarded and used as intended.
The Executive Director will also oversee and work closely with the association’s for-profit subsidiaries and philanthropic entity, providing supervision and attending board and committee meetings for each.
While most work is performed at the WDA headquarters office, a considerable amount of time will be spent in meetings, some taking place over weekends and during evening hours. Travel, both in and out of state, is required with some events requiring overnight stays.
The ideal candidate will possess excellent people skills and a collaborative leadership style in addition to strong communication, management and organizational skills. The candidate must have a high level of integrity and maintain relationships with members and other key stakeholders who have differing opinions. The candidate should have an advanced general education consistent with a bachelor’s degree program; knowledge of association issues and the regulatory legal environment governing nonprofit organizations; familiarity with the dental profession and oral health issues is preferred but not required.
