The Journalism Education Association (JEA) has a new opportunity to support our mission of supporting free and responsible scholastic journalism. JEA is hiring a member engagement strategist to engage a variety of constituents including members, non-members, and relevant companies. The new engagement strategist will be responsible for three main areas: member development, marketing and communication, and business development and sales. JEA is seeking a dynamic, proactive, passionate association professional who is creative and analytical in membership, marketing, communication, development/growth strategies, and execution to join our small, but mighty staff.
Note that JEA has a physical office at Kansas State University (K-State) where a couple employees are based while other positions are remote. This member engagement strategist position is eligible for remote positioning. And the position title listed on the K-State website is their internal university equivalent (i.e. communication and marketing consultant) but this is a full-time employee (FTE) remote role.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE
Member Development: Work closely with the Executive Director to develop strategies and programs to nurture member engagement and membership growth. Strategic areas will include membership services and outreach, recruitment, and retention in support of an inclusive organization.
Develop and execute an effective data-driven member engagement, onboarding/retention, and recruitment strategy and implementation plan.
• Create compelling, engaging multi-channel collateral to support the strategy and implementation plan. • Provide regular data and insights into the membership program and demographics. • Conduct market research to analyze membership trends and prospecting. • Review and improve current and potential member benefits and services. • Maintain inventory of membership materials and platforms including member database, directories, and listserv. • Engage with members and non-members online and in person with high-level customer service and problem solving abilities.
Marketing and Communication: Strategize and implement marcom responsibilities to include advertising and promotional activities, research, and market expansion which overlap with many of the member engagement activities.
• Create and maintain a unique value proposition and brand standards. • Develop and execute the association's communications and marketing strategy through a variety of platforms, including social media, other digital channels, and print collateral. • Prepare and manage consistent messaging internally and externally in alignment with our goals and brand. • Write, copyedit, design, and manage dynamic, current content across communication channels including the JEA website as well as advertising and blog posts. • Plan and execute the JEA exhibit booth strategy and store.
Business Development: Partner with the Executive Director to design attractive avenues for partners to connect their products and services to the JEA market. You will partner with companies to determine their needs and create sales opportunities that contribute to non-dues revenue for the association.
Advertising Sales and Sponsorships
• Design sales and marketing plans and packages to grow association revenue across the enterprise. • Execute plans to generate qualified leads and identify sales opportunities. • Connect with prospects in various communication channels including in person and online. • Regularly report sales and provide ad information for production in publications. • Manage database for sales and ad sales reports.
Fundraising and Giving Support and assist the executive director in fundraising efforts that may include:
• Provide relevant grant opportunities to the Executive Director. • Coordinate collaboration and cross-selling opportunities between sponsors and funders. • Write, design, and promote fundraising collateral. • Ensure timely correspondence and proper acknowledgment of donors. • Track and monitor fund raising activities for reporting.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Education: Bachelor's Degree required in Business, Communication, Journalism, Marketing, or related field.
Required Experience: 4+ years' experience in membership, marketing, and ad/sponsorship sales in non-profit member association marketing, membership development, or related functions.
Other Requirements:
• Proficient in membership database management. • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite.
• Experience using AP style. • Proficient in member and marketing tools and data analytics including the Google environment and Google Analytics. • Proficient in utilizing social media platforms; marketing automation, AMS, CRM, CMS, and WordPress. • Skilled with computer and communication collaboration tools (e.g. for project management). • Strong interpersonal skills and commitment to a high level of customer service. • Excellent oral and written communication skills to interact effectively with a variety of stakeholders, staff, boards, and various funding entities. • Ability and willingness to travel and represent JEA including at least two conventions a year (fall and spring). • Maintain confidentiality and utmost professionalism. • Excellent organizational and time management skills and the ability to meet deadlines.
