The California Association of Private School Organizations (CAPSO) seeks an experienced and dynamic chief executive to lead the organization's operations and statewide advocacy agenda. This is a fully remote position, and the executive director is expected to be based in California. The anticipated start date is May/June 2024.
The California Association of Private School Organizations is a consortium of pre-collegiate, independent, and religious school organizations which strives to promote and preserve understanding among its members, to promote excellence in education throughout the represented schools, and to preserve philosophical and religious values as well as spiritual dimensions of life which are integral parts in the development of its students. CAPSO's member organizations represent sectarian and non-sectarian schools, serving approximately 80 percent of California's children from preschool through twelfth grade who are enrolled in the state's private schools.
The Position Reporting to the CAPSO board of directors, the executive director serves as the association's chief executive officer and is responsible for the operational leadership and management of the association, including a $300,000 operating budget. The executive director provides leadership in the development of the association's strategies, plans, and budgets in support of its mission, vision, and priorities; advises, makes recommendations to, and assists the board of directors in formulating policies for the association; and monitors the development of strategic priorities to ensure the effective design, promotion, and delivery of the association's activities and services.
The executive director liaises with and cultivates positive relationships between CAPSO and appropriate federal, state, and local educational agencies, offices, and persons, including the US Department of Education; California Department of Education; California State Board of Education; Office of the Governor; Accrediting Commission for Schools, Western Association of Schools and Colleges; California Interscholastic Federation; and, as needed, local public school districts and county departments of health.
The executive director is the association's sole paid employee and maintains active status and good standing as a California registered lobbyist. They are an ex officio, non-voting member of the CAPSO board of directors and serve on the board's executive, public policy, and finance committees.
Qualifications The next executive director will be a respected and credible leader with a track record of delivering results and a strong commitment to private school education and CAPSO's mission. The ideal candidate will have significant experience in fiscal management; a track record of uniting diverse stakeholders around a vision; demonstrated public affairs skills, including electronic and print media relations; familiarity with decentralized organizations; and a substantial understanding of current national issues in private K-12 education.

The approved hiring salary range for the executive director is $150,000-$200,000, commensurate with experience.
