The Southfield Downtown Development Authority (SDDA) was established on May 23, 1988. It was created pursuant to the Downtown Development Authority Act, Michigan Public Act 197 of 1975, as amended. It purposes is to correct and prevent deterioration in the district through means empowered by the legislation. The SDDA is identified as the southeast portion of the community bordered by Mt. Vernon (North), Greenfield Road (East), Eight Mile Road (South), Northwestern Hwy (West). Major employment centers include Providence Hospital, Oakland Community College, the former Northland Mall, Fox 2, as well as small retail and office centers.
