The Institute for Nonprofit News is seeking a nonprofit sponsorship sales and management contractor to develop ongoing opportunities and sales that support the growth of nonprofit, nonpartisan news media across North America.
The contract encompasses year-around consultative sales with INN partners and service providers who seek to support this emerging media movement, extend their branding in this fast-growing field and reach journalism entrepreneurs. The provider also will update and manage sponsorship assets, materials, pricing and opportunity briefs, working with INN’s communications team to post a sponsorship kit for prospects and with program leads to define opportunities and partner on some strategic outreach.
INN began sponsorship sales in 2020. This contract builds on two years of rapid development that provides a strong foundation for added growth. Management and sales currently require about 10 hours per week on average, with some seasonal fluctuation.
INN is a field-building organization that leads and advances the growth of more than 400 newsrooms across North America, all nonprofit, non-partisan and dedicated to providing journalism as a public service. Together we are building sources of trusted news for thousands of diverse communities throughout the country. INN members have direct audiences in the millions and distribute their news through more than 7,000 other news outlets as well. The INN Network of newsrooms now staff over 6,000 people across the country on both the editorial and business side.
Network leaders include the top nonprofit news organizations in the country, from global and national media such as ProPublica, Politifact, Mother Jones, the International Center for Investigative Journalism and the Forward, to state and local news media trend-setters such as Berkeleyside, CalMatters, Texas Tribune, Sahan Journal and Documented. These decision-makers choose vendors for technology, support services, fundraising and more. Sponsorship also reaches a community of journalists, civic and business leaders, philanthropists and others working to build fact-based media that can bridge divides, connect and strengthen the communities it serves.
The sponsorship manager will develop a portfolio of prospects and manage the sales and stewardship of both current and new sponsors. Opportunities span year-around publications, events and capacity-building series. They include:
Annual conference. INN produces the largest annual gathering of nonprofit news media leaders, funders and those engaged with public service journalism to connect, learn and advance the field. In 2023, the INN Days conference will return as an in-person conference after two years of virtual meetings, a multi-day gathering with premier speakers, workshops, display and meetup opportunities. INN Days 2022 drew more than 600 participants. In 2023, INN Days will also feature a summit for all participants and alumni from our Emerging Leaders Council, our annual cohort of some of the field’s most promising and diverse leaders in the field.
Regional and virtual meetups. In 2023, INN will produce at least two regional conferences for member news leaders, academics, researchers and supporters, and two virtual sessions, which draw hundreds of participants. Sponsorable gatherings also will be organized in conjunction with major journalism and philanthropy conferences, such as the Investigative Reporters & Editors annual meeting, the Online News Association annual conference in the fall and ComNet, the Communications Network gathering.
The annual “INNY” Nonprofit News Awards draw hundreds of journalists to the entry pages, hybrid live-cast and in-person awards presentation, and to winning stories and announcements after. The awards generate high social media traffic as well. INN will be creating enduring web pages for the awards in 2023 and after. There is a strong brand alignment opportunity around some of the best journalism in the nation.
Leadership series and special convenings. INN provides a highly effective network to reach emerging leaders in journalism, through gatherings of the 50+ people in the Emerging Leaders Council alumni groups, a leadership training series and internship and fellowship programs aimed at building a more diverse and inclusive media field.
the INN Rural News Network, an ongoing consortia of more than 60 news organizations
an INN online community of more than 500 news fundraising directors that may also gather in person, and
editors of publications providing bilingual coverage.
Sponsorable office hours and coaching programs also are available.
Publications. Research reports and case studies draw nationwide and international attention throughout the year, led by a series of reports and briefings from the INN Index, the most comprehensive study of this emerging media field. Two weekly newsletters and other publications reach thousands of subscribers. Our newsletters have on average 56% open rates.
