· Edit, proofread, verify, and write copy and acquire and review graphics/photographs for prepress production of American Jails magazine, conference, training, and certification publications; promotional materials; AJA website postings; and general AJA correspondence. · Solicit and coordinate magazine article development with prospective authors. · Act as project manager for multi-departmental publications (facilitate the review process, establish version control, timelines, deadlines, vendor prepress coordination, etc.). · Coordinate with outside editorial assistance providers when required. · Ghost-write speeches, columns and articles when required. · Create an annual editorial theme calendar for the magazine. · Update and maintain AJA Style Guide. · Work with external graphic designers and printers on production schedules for the magazine and other publications and promotions. · Write/edit promotional copy upon request. · Schedule and manage the placement of AJA ads in the magazine. · Work with other staff members to provide content as needed for the magazine, other publications, and promotions.
Must be physically present in the office most days. Limited opportunity to telework.
- Associates degree or higher in English, Journalism, or Mass Communications strongly preferred.
- At least three years proven experience in editing/proofreading hard copy and electronic publications.
- Familiarity with one or more common editing style manuals (AP, APA, Chicago, etc.).
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines.
- Familiarity with the publishing/printing process.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel.
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. Must be a team player and interact with authors and coworkers in a collaborative, professional and productive manner.
- Detail oriented with exceptional writing and editing skills. Must pass an in-house editing/proofreading test.
