The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the national nonprofit association established in 1863 that represents more than 99,500 veterinarians working in private and corporate practice, government, industry, academia, and uniformed services, is seeking an Accounts Payable (AP) Accountant to join our Finance and Business Services team, located at our Headquarters office in Schaumburg, Illinois – a northwest suburb of Chicago. The AVMA’s mission is to lead the profession by advocating for its members and advancing the science and practice of veterinary medicine to improve animal and human health.
Under the direction of the Accounts Payable Manager, The AP Accountant is responsible for performing a variety of tasks related to the accounts payable function, which includes processing invoices for payment. This position will establish and maintain vendor accounts; process vendor invoices and payments; and review and process expense reports for staff and volunteer leadership, while ensuring compliance with all financial policies and procedures, along with audit guidelines.

- Associates degree in accounting, or a related field; or equivalent work experience
- 1-3 years of AP or general accounting experience is required, association experience is a plus
- Demonstrated knowledge of accounting practices and principles
- Experience with accounting and expense reporting software is required, knowledge of Great Plains and Concur is highly preferred
- Proficient in data entry
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), with the ability to interact and provide exceptional customer service to all levels of AVMA staff, volunteer leadership and members
- Highly organized, with good attention to detail
- Great project and time-management skills, with the ability to multi-task and prioritize responsibilities, while meeting multiple deadlines
- Strong computer skills, with the knowledge of commonly used computer applications
- Flexibility to work overtime and/or outside of normal business hours, as needed
