Research!America is the nation’s leading nonprofit membership alliance working to assure that research for health is a much higher national priority. As the lead fundraising professional for Research!America and a member of the senior leadership team, you will secure financial support through direct solicitation of membership dues, signature event sponsorships, individual contributions, program partnerships, and grants. Reporting to the CEO and working closely with her, the senior management team, the Board of Directors’ Resource Development Committee, the Membership Committee, and other staff, you will provide expert support and guidance to meet revenue objectives and expand support of the organization while ensuring ongoing stewardship of donors, sponsors, and members. You will execute and manage the annual resource development plan, which has been growing steadily and is on average about $5 million in financial support from various sources.
Every year, nearly 130,000 Americans under age 45 lose their lives to health threats that research can overcome. In 2018, spending to treat major chronic diseases and conditions topped $1.1 trillion, more than 26 times federal medical and health research and development (R&D) spending. In that year, industry funded two-thirds of medical and health R&D funding, while federal agencies accounted for 22 percent. Private sector R&D leverages discoveries made possible through public funding of research at universities and research institutes across the country. This public/private sector partnership leads to the delivery of new treatments and cures that improve health for all, but there is so much more to be done. Research!America’s membership, from across the research and development ecosystem, have joined together in this alliance to advocate for medical progress to ensure the federal government commits to sustained, predictable increases in funding for the federal research enterprise [National Institutes of Health (NIH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), National Science Foundation (NSF), and others].
You will be joining Research!America at a time of growth and your leadership will be integral to substantially increase our revenue. About a third of our revenue is from membership (universities, independent research institutes, academic health centers, scientific societies, industry, patient advocacy organizations, and philanthropies), a third is in the form of program sponsorships from partners (we anticipate this support will increase with renewed interest in and funding for medical and health research), and the remaining third is from foundation grants and donations from individuals. Supported by a team of two (a senior director of alliance development and membership and a director of membership and advocacy), you will launch an individual annual giving program to build a pipeline for major donors and endowment contributions. After 31 years, our leadership team and board have strong relationships built across the sector; you will help ensure we have effective systems in place to steward those relationships and cultivate opportunities for increased future support.
Through direct solicitation, grant writing, and facilitating meetings and communication between prospects and the CEO and/or other leaders, secure sponsorships, contributions, and grants for programs, projects, and events.
Work as an effective partner with the CEO and other leaders to support fundraising and membership outreach efforts.
Develop and execute strategies and plans to optimize member retention, new member recruitment, and growth of membership dues revenue. Focus on diversifying revenue through individual giving, foundations, and program partner support.
Build and maintain stakeholder relationships, engaging the CEO and other organization leaders in stewardship activities.
Oversee the fundraising, planning, and execution of plans for the Advocacy Awards event. Oversee the fundraising for the National Health Research Forum.
Provide expert-level staff support to the Board of Directors’ Membership Committee, the Resource Development Committee, and the Advocacy Awards Selection Committee and other task forces or committees that may be appointed from time to time. Guide and support board and committee members to be actively, productively, and successfully involved in membership and development activities.
Ensure timely and thoughtful communication to members, sponsors, and donors, including requests for support, acknowledgment of support, grant reports, and other regular or periodic communication to enhance the relationship between the organization and supporters.
Manage and coach assigned staff to achieve optimal performance.
Lead continual prospecting activities to identify and research prospects for new members, sponsors, foundations, and donors.
Provide oversight of the comprehensive constituent database management.
Demonstrated track record of success in fundraising with membership development experience desirable and 15+ years or more of results-driven experience.
A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field; CFRE is desirable.
Expertise managing prestigious events raising $1 million or more.
Experience with cultivating and stewarding endowment gifts is a plus.
Eight years or more of supervisory experience.
Working knowledge of advocacy for medical health research is a bonus.

Public sentiment. We gauge Americans' attitudestoward medical, health, and scientific research through commissioned public opinion surveys and use this data to make the case to policymakers for funding and policies to advance medical progress.
Public education. We produce reports, fact sheets, position pieces, and other publicationsto raise awareness about research issues, promote the importance of investment in research, and foster effective collaboration among the nation's government, industry, academic, and philanthropic research sectors.
