With more than 4,000 members, ACES: The Society for Editing is the nation’s leading organization of editing professionals, educators, and students. We are dedicated to improving the quality of the written word and the working lives of editors. ACES was founded in 1997 and is a 501(c)(3) organization.
You are passionate and precise, inclusive and respectful of different viewpoints, approachable and tactful, persuasive in dealing with both internal and external audiences.
You are willing to do anything yet seasoned enough to know you don't have to do it all. ACES is a small but growing association, so you are excited by player/coach roles, and your strengths include listening to your team and delegating effectively. You are a purpose-driven leader who will translate our mission and strategic plan from words to action with internal and external constituencies.
As Senior Operations Manager/Executive Director, you will report to the president of ACES and the board of directors. You will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the association, including talent development, financial management, convention planning, and board management, all in support of the association’s mission. You will work remotely, engaging with a highly motivated team of 2.5 full-time employees. You have a willingness and ability to travel to our in-person conferences and training sessions.
You are exceptionally intelligent with a combination of highly successful interpersonal skills, tenacity, realistic optimism, and an eye for detail. Additionally, you have the following qualifications and experience:
5+ years of progressive experience in senior-level management roles, including within an association;
A bachelor’s degree;
A CAE certification — or demonstrated progress toward that certification — is preferable;
Ability to communicate in oral and written forms to internal and external audiences;
Responsible and effective stewardship of financial operations, resources and assets;
Development and cultivation of relationships with key stakeholders, sponsors, and partner organizations;
Recruitment, development, supervision and mentorship of a professional staff in implementing an organization's strategic plan and associated activities;
Ability to ensure an organization’s compliance with applicable laws and regulations;
Public speaking and effectively serving as the spokesperson for an organization;
Cultivation and management of organizational equity, diversity and inclusiveness; and
Advancement of an organization’s advocacy and policy agenda on behalf of its membership.
Together we will advocate and support the needs of editing professionals, educators, and students:
Develop collaborative partnerships with other national organizations, foundations, corporations and other entities relevant to the mission;
Oversee planning and implementing an annual conference;
Create a culture of transparency and communication throughout the organization;
Recruit and retain members, and plan to meet member needs;
Develop and steward an annual budget of about $400,000 that balances annual needs and long-term planning; and
Achieve and maintain a strategic vision and focus for the board of directors.
Salary is commensurate with the size of the organization and your experience/education. While this offer does not currently offer health care benefits, this opportunity does offer remote working and a flexible working schedule, along with standard benefits such as PTO, a Simple IRA Plan, and 7 paid company holidays.
