As part of our team, you will help us achieve our mission by creating and promoting content that informs members and non-members of the society's resources and promotes our events and technical products and services.
About the Position
In this role you will be the voice of our organization by shaping important communications to our members. You will work with society stakeholders to craft messages that inform members and potential members of the value of our membership. In addition, you will work with subject matter experts to curate scientific content that our members find valuable and help members understand how to access that content.
What you’ll do here
Writes and edits content related to membership, technical products, and conferences and disseminates content through various communication channels, including email, web, blog, and print.
Critically analyzes scientific research reports and global market trends to identify emerging themes for the development of related content.
Researches and writes original articles and other content.
Leads social media activities, including developing social media calendars and content; monitoring and responding to social media queries; and posting social media messages.
Supports the society’s brand initiatives by ensuring materials are accurate, written in the appropriate tone and style for the audience and type of communication vehicle, and adhere to brand standards.
Supports the overall communications strategy by maintaining media relations, assisting in drafting and executing marketing and communication project plans, coordinating an email calendar, sharing suggestions on overall themes and content of materials, and completing special projects as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, chemistry, or related field
A scientific background and/or experience in science communications
Knowledge of the AP Stylebook and/or the Chicago Manual of Style
Excellent literature search and online research skills
Excellent writing, editing, and oral communication skills
Proficiency in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Ability to use and understand basic computer programs, current technology, and office equipment
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact professionally and effectively with all levels of staff and members
Ability to work effectively in multicultural situations
Ability to travel on occasion
Bonus Qualifications:
Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in a communications or science writing role
Previous experience as a science writer or as a writer in a science-based environment; professional writing experience (particularly in science writing); a science degree (particularly in chemistry); or an advanced science degree
Experience using email marketing platforms, such as Real Magnet or Informz
Excellent literature search and online research skills
Experience managing and/or moderating an online community
An advanced science degree, particularly chemistry, or advanced degree in journalism or science communication.
