ALA is seeking a Manager, Marketing and Membership to join the Public Library Association (PLA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA).
Reporting to the Deputy Executive Director, the PLA Manager of Marketing and Membership plans and executes marketing strategies for all PLA major initiatives, including the biennial PLA Conference, other educational programs and webinars, and wide-ranging initiatives that help public libraries teach digital literacy, promote health and wellness, measure their outcomes, and more. The Marketing and Membership Manager will oversee multiple, diverse marketing campaigns simultaneously, targeting both public library staff and external stakeholders.
In addition, this position coordinates membership recruitment and retention efforts with the ALA membership department, specifically to increase the number of ALA members who join the PLA division and to secure a high retention rate among PLA members. Will also oversee promotion of the PLA brand and visual identity, ensuring high quality and consistency across materials and programs.
Knowledge of the creation and management of diverse marketing strategies and campaigns, from planning to execution to impact analysis, is essential. Creativity in identifying audiences and external partners for outreach and the ability to take initiative in making connections for collaborative/joint marketing will be expected. Excellent writing/editing ability, positive customer and member orientation, strong interpersonal communication skills, and the ability to collaborate are critical for this position. Some design skills and database management experience are desired.
Key responsibilities include the following:
Create and implement annual marketing plans and promotion schedules, to include developing marketing copy, overseeing production and distribution of print and electronic promotional and program materials, and effectively utilizing digital media for marketing
Cultivate a deepening knowledge of the public library market and explore and integrate other markets relevant to PLA initiatives (for instance, the education sector)
Track marketing data and evaluate impact of marketing/promotional efforts.
Write and produce regular membership material including applications, renewal communications, new member welcome communications, brochures and member offers
Handle administrative functions related to membership and marketing such as budget development and tracking and list management
Salary: Negotiable from the high 50s; based on relevant work experience. ALA has an excellent benefit package that includes medical, dental, generous paid vacation, and retirement annuity.

Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of five years of experience in marketing and/or membership recruitment and retention in a professional association environment. Knowledge of Microsoft Office is essential; experience with iMIS database and bulk emailing software is useful; experience with Adobe Suite is also useful.
