The National Communication Association (NCA) seeks a dynamic and collaborative individual to help execute a media relations, social media, and member service strategy designed to promote the scholarly discipline of Communication. NCA serves the scholars, teachers, and practitioners who are its members by enabling and supporting their professional interests in research and teaching. Dedicated to fostering and promoting free and ethical communication, NCA promotes the widespread appreciation of the importance of communication in public and private life, the application of competent communication to improve the quality of human life and relationships, and the use of knowledge about communication to solve human problems. Reporting Structure: The Media Relations and Public Outreach Manager reports to the Director of External Affairs and Publications.
Manage development of NCA’s newsletter, Inside & Out, gathering/writing/editing content and working with others on production
Increase the translation and dissemination of Communication research by pursuing opportunities to place translated content on NCA’s various communication channels and with media outlets, helping to foster a culture among Communication scholars of talking to the press about their research, and identifying new outlets for translational content
Serve as Managing Editor of Communication Currents, helping to select scholarly content from NCA’s 11 journals, developing translational articles in collaboration with authors of the original articles, and incorporating translated articles into NCA’s media relations and social media strategy
Manage and implement the association’s proactive media relations strategy including developing relationships with key journalists who focus on communication and/or higher education issues, writing press releases and media advisories, working with the association’s publishing partner to develop and disseminate joint releases, continuously developing and managing member experts list, and facilitating journalist visits to NCA’s annual convention and other programming and events
Manage NCA’s social media strategy including translating, writing/editing and repackaging content covering association news, new Communication research, external items of interest, and other relevant topics; coordinate and maintain a publishing calendar for creating and posting content to social media outlets; engage with the NCA social media community in real-time to foster stronger relationships with members and the public
Support NCA public programs, Annual Convention, and other initiatives via marketing and promotion
Collaborate with NCA staff to develop, maintain, and promote materials, resources, publications, and other content for the website, newsletter, events, and other communication channels
Respond to a variety of relevant requests for assistance from NCA members
Manage the daily CRTNET listserv
Utilize key metrics and reporting to support communications strategy, in collaboration with the EAP team and other departments
Manage other responsibilities as assigned by the Director of External Affairs and Publications
BA or advanced degree in a related field such as communication, journalism, or public relations
Proven professional experience in media relations and/or organizational communications
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to make complicated ideas understandable by diverse audiences
Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
Knowledge of the social sciences and humanities; familiarity with scholarly research
