The Director of Membership and Engagement is a self-initiated, innovative thinker who builds trusted, lasting relationships with members, volunteer leaders, colleagues, and other stakeholders. Working with the senior leadership team at APWA, the Director of Membership and Engagement leads the development and realization of a comprehensive membership vision and supporting strategies that align with broader organizational goals and yield measurable results. The Director oversees all membership, engagement and chapter-related functions, ensures the delivery of excellent customer service, and promotes cross-organizational awareness and collaboration. Management responsibilities include both direct and indirect supervision of a team of five staff. Other specific responsibilities include:
Strategy and Planning
Develop, implement and continually monitor a comprehensive membership growth and retention strategy, including goals, tactics, timeline and performance/ progress-driven metrics
In partnership with staff and leadership at the local and national levels, design and implement key initiatives to reinforce and strengthen APWA’s value proposition and drive member engagement, satisfaction and retention
Participate in organizational strategy-setting initiatives, including strategic planning, budgeting, etc.
In close collaboration with the Marketing and Web Services team and other staff, identify and assess opportunities for new markets, non-dues related products and services, and other opportunities to diversify APWA’s revenue streams and ensure high levels of participation and satisfaction
Optimize the relationship between APWA National and its Chapters to ensure the delivery of an unparalleled, consistent membership experience and the highest level of efficiency and effectiveness
Implement succession planning and redundancy initiatives both at the national and local level to ensure the preservation of excellent member and stakeholder experiences
Serve as a source of membership-related expertise for staff, leaders, and other stakeholders
Monitor, assess and introduce new trends and initiatives that help APWA – and the Membership Department – achieve its mission and goals
Recruit and retain highly trained and qualified staff by providing ongoing professional mentoring, developing each individual’s knowledge base and skill set, and serving as a resource for new and current department staff
Ensure delivery of timely and superior customer service to all stakeholders
Oversee all membership-related administrative functions (e.g. annual renewal cycles, data integrity, etc.) with a commitment to continuous quality improvement
Provide leadership and support to the APWA Council of Chapters and other assigned volunteer committees and task forces
Develop and oversee a grassroots engagement program that cultivates and deploys staff and leader “ambassadors” to provide direct support to local Chapter leaders while building awareness and engagement among rank-and-file members at the local level
Promote a member-centric culture by raising awareness of key membership-related initiatives, developments, and trends
Ensure the collection, analysis, and application of data and analytics to inform decision-making and monitor current and future membership and participation trends
Work closely with the Marketing and Web Services team to ensure that core themes and messages meet the needs and expectations of key audiences and are delivered consistently across all Chapters and Branches
Oversee the development of membership-related content for APWA’s major channels, such as the website, webinars, newsletters, publications, etc.
Qualifications of the Successful Candidate
The desired background of a successful candidate will have ten years of proven success in a non-profit setting and a record of evolving responsibility (or an equivalent combination of education and experience) including a minimum of four years in a supervisory role along with leadership and management experience. Certified Association Executive credential preferred. Additional qualifications include:
Proven ability to cultivate strong, trusted relationships with members, chapters, and other stakeholders
Demonstrated success in building and implementing a program or initiative that translates into high levels of participation, satisfaction, revenue, etc.
Outstanding written and verbal communications skills, including strong persuasive skills and excellent presentation skills
Ability to achieve independent success while maintaining a commitment to the success of the department and organization
Demonstrated strategic and analytical thinking skills
Proven ability to prioritize and manage multiple commitments
