The Director of Membership at the American Psychiatric Association (APA) is a prominent position that works across the organization to provide leadership and direction to achieve the organization’s membership recruitment and retention goals. The Director oversees the development of membership standards and services; manages day-to-day operations; and leads a team of twelve that are accountable for recruitment and retention, database management, dues invoicing and renewals. The Director also provides primary support to the Membership Committee and works closely with District Branches and their leadership.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Oversee all activities related to planning, implementation, and evaluation of membership initiatives to maximize results.
Analyze membership data and strategic planning results in order to identify the needs of members and potential members.
Provides membership retention and recruitment best practices and keeps abreast of association trends to provide guidance to the local district branch and state associations to meet shared goals for recruitment and retention.
Collaborate closely with colleagues in other APA departments to develop, facilitate and execute marketing and promotional strategies to meet organizational membership goals.
Advise leadership on membership trends and identify problem areas.
Monitor both the association and membership environments to identify changes and evaluate and adjust the departmental plans and processes accordingly.
Contribute ideas and works collaboratively with others throughout the organization to build member value.
Advise and consult with district branch executive staff on membership activities and transactions based on APA policies and procedures.
Direct all aspects of membership business operations of the association, including development and implementation of membership policies and procedures and the departmental budget.
Responsible for the membership invoice renewal process ($10m annually), payment processing, and collections for the district branches ($5m annually).
Oversees the development of the membership database in conjunction the Deputy Director, Member Experience & Administration.
Ensure all departmental database and reporting issues are addressed and resolved in a timely manner.
Responsible for promoting a positive and accountable team culture and for hiring, training, professional development, and evaluation of department employees.
Directly responsible for staffing the Membership Committee; consulting with the chair on a regular basis; planning committee meetings and conference calls; preparing and distributing agenda and back-up material; and developing reports to the Board of Trustees for the Committee.

REQUIRED SKILLS, EXPERIENCE, AND QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, Master’s degree and/or CAE preferred
Minimum 10 years of related association management experience, with at least 5 years of upper level management.
Proficient in use of Association Management Systems, preferably MemberNation (Salesforce).
Highly driven and results oriented, strong management skills, ability to set and enforce priorities and deadlines.
Demonstrated proficiency in systems thinking, collaboration and teamwork, coaching and interviewing, creative problem solving, analytical ability, and presentation skills.
Excellent oral and written communications skills to effectively communicate with all stakeholders.
Excellent interpersonal skills to ensure positive and collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Strong customer service orientation to interact and problem solve with members and promote the association in a positive, professional manner.
Demonstrated experience working with local chapters.
Ability to work independently and to multi-task in a fast-paced, deadline-driven business environment.
Experience working with volunteers and committees.
Ability to work flexible hours in a complex organizational environment.
