The American Library Association (ALA), the oldest, largest and most influential library association in the world is seeking an Associate Executive Director (AED) to head our Washington DC office.
The American Library Association's Washington Office was established in 1945 to represent libraries on Capitol Hill, and now consists of the Office of Government Relations (OGR) and the Office for Information Technology Policy (OITP).
The ALA Washington Office provides executive leadership and administrative support to OGR and OITP, in addition to conducting media outreach and public relations efforts. The Washington Office also builds coalitions and partnerships with Washington-based representatives of other groups with interests similar to the library community. They also work with 50 state chapters and other member groups to lead grass roots efforts in states and individual districts in support of national efforts.
Reporting to ALA’s Executive Director and as a member of the ALA’s senior management team, the AED Washington will direct and manage the Washington Office; represent libraries and librarians in the Washington community which includes the Congress, the Executive Branch and the Judiciary and raise the visibility in the national debate and the public’s consciousness
The AED Washington office has a staff of 16 and the AED has 4 direct reports - Director, Office of Government Relations, Director, Office of Intellectual Policy, Director of Administration, and Press Officer (This position also reports 50% to the Director, Public Awareness Office in Chicago)
The AED Washington will also work with the Committees on Legislation and Office for Information and Technology Policy on a regular basis along with other ALA Committees on an as needed basis.
