NASW is seeking a Senior Public Relations Specialist to help NASW raise awareness about social work and social workers, and engage members and supporters in the work of the Association. This position requires a self-starter who will help create content for NASW web properties—including the HelpStartsHere.org consumer website and SocialWorkersSpeak.org media website. They will also work with journalists on a variety of public interest stories. The ideal candidate will help NASW promote its programs, positions, products and services with the nation’s 650,000 social workers through social media and related PR campaigns.
Works with staff in multiple units to identify and communicate NASW priorities and benefits.
Researches and writes about social work, public policy, and human services topics.
Represents the association in online member communities and on blogs.
Responds to requests for information from journalists, NASW members and the public.
Helps coordinate events and public education campaigns with national partner groups.
Collaborates with communications, marketing, web/digital, design, policy and practice staff.
Assists NASW’s 55 chapters with public relations activities.
Reports to the NASW Public Relations Manager.
ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
Requires strong interpersonal skills as well as excellent oral and written verbal skills.
Requires effective organizational and project management skills.
Must possess excellent proofreading and editing skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications: Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint.
Frequent use of social media channels, including Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Instagram.
Some knowledge of photography and video production preferred.
Ability to use blog platforms, such as WordPress.
Working knowledge of media outreach software such as Vocus, Meltwater or IQ Media.
Familiarity with Google Analytics and other tracking software to measure results.
Bachelor's degree in journalism or communications, public relations or marketing from an accredited four-year university is required.
Familiarity with the social work profession or a passion for social justice issues is preferred.
Interest in learning about various areas of the social work profession: aging, child development, health care, mental health, addiction, poverty, discrimination, family dynamics and public policy.
Requires a minimum of five years related work experience in addition to the education requirement.
