We are the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), an innovative professional medical association located in Darien, IL, a southwest suburb of Chicago. We’re looking for a Director of Development serve as our key leader in prospect research, cultivation and solicitation of all development activities and donor stewardship in support of the American Sleep Medicine Foundation (ASMF). In addition, this individual will be responsible for development of fundraising campaigns, regular communication with current and prospective donors, and management of our donor relations program and fundraising initiatives.
Since our needs are immediate, we will only consider local candidates.
What You’ll Do
Establish short- and long-term goals for the development effort, including fundraising strategies and building the case for support.
Identify prospective individual and corporate donors with a special focus on diversification to include sources of revenue beyond existing funds i.e. industry, academic partnerships, grant matching opportunities. Develop strategies to cultivate those relationships.
Implement a thorough donor acknowledgement and stewardship system and maintain consistent contact with major donors.
Engage with recurring donors and create a donor relations program for repeat/past donors.
Establish the solicitation process, including recommended proposal ask amounts and monitoring committee/volunteer assignments.
Develop a marketing plan to increase the visibility of the ASMF and its relationship with the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). Propose and potentially build a development team in support of these initiatives.
Create and distribute promotional materials geared toward different donor groups.
Create press releases and keep website donation content fresh and engaging
Provide timely and accurate reports to donors and ASMF Board of Directors (BOD) members.
Track and analyze data and defined metrics on fundraising activities and results.
Participate in strategic planning initiatives with ASMF BOD and Assistant Executive Director.
Participate on monthly ASMF Executive Committee conference calls to report on fiduciary and strategic initiatives.
Collaborate with staff on the management and planning of fundraising events and donor receptions
What We Need
Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Philanthropic Studies or related field
Minimum 6 years of development experience in the healthcare field
Effectively communicate with large corporations and academic institutions at the executive level
Proven record of innovative and sustainable fundraising from corporations, high net worth individuals, foundations, and government agencies with high results, as well as significant experience with earned income strategies
Experience scaling programs and ability to point to specific examples of having developed and operationalized strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth
A combination of strong leadership, management skills, and creative problem-solving
Entrepreneurial mindset balanced with the desire to produce results for the benefit of the sleep medicine profession
Exceptional relationship-building and interpersonal skills
Expert multitasker with the ability to adapt to changing priorities
Development experience in the medical association field is a plus
