JDG Associates, Ltd. has been engaged by the Schaumburg, IL-based Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute (CRSI) to conduct the executive search for its President and CEO position.
Founded in 1924, CRSI is a technical institute and Standards Developing Organization (SDO) that stands as the authoritative resource for information related to steel reinforced concrete construction. CRSI offers many industry-trusted technical publications, standards documents, design aids, reference materials and educational opportunities. Also, as the authority on steel reinforced concrete construction, the Institute plays a critical role in promoting its benefits and advantages over competing construction materials and systems. CRSI members include manufacturers, fabricators, material suppliers and placers of steel reinforcing bars and related products as well as professionals involved in the research, design, and construction of steel reinforced concrete. With members engaged in steel production and rebar fabrication at over 450 locations in 47 states throughout North America, CRSI has six regional offices.
A separate CRSI Research & Education Foundation was founded in 1982 to foster the educational and research mission of the Institute through scholarships and other programs for civil engineering, architecture, and related disciplines at universities and technical schools. The position presents the opportunity to lead a financially sound organization in the construction industry that is highly regarded for the strength of its research and technical capability. The successful candidate will work with top executives from large, multi-national companies, as well as smaller, highly entrepreneurial organizations from across the country. Also, CRSI offers the leadership of an established, highly competent and dedicated professional staff that is well regarded by an equally committed and engaged volunteer leadership.
CRSI’s CEO reports to the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors, supervising a staff of 16 and annual revenue base of $5 million. In addition to ensuring that CRSI maintains and grows its technical and engineering stature as the authority on concrete reinforcing steel construction, the CEO is responsible for strengthening its promotional role and programs, in particular demonstrating the impact of CRSI’s promotional efforts on decision makers in the markets served. The CEO also plays a leading role in the development of CRSI’s organizational profile, serving as its principal spokesperson with industry partners and stakeholders as well as developing and strengthening its advocacy program, including engagement and impact at the Federal level. The position also serves as the President of the CRSI Foundation.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Inform the Executive Committee, the Board, and the Officers of the conditions and operations of CRSI and of all important factors affecting CRSI and the industry that it represents.
Plan, formulate and recommend for Board approval policies and programs which will further the objectives of the Institute, executing decisions of the Board and developing specific policies, procedures, and programs to implement established Board policies.
Oversee CRSI’s promotional efforts to strengthen the market position of steel reinforced concrete construction, at all times seeking opportunities and venues to demonstrate their positive impact on decision makers.
Support and further develop CRSI’s high performing staff through strong leadership, clearly defining duties and performance standards and undertaking regular dialogue with staff members regarding their contributions.
Assume responsibility for the administrative and financial well-being of CRSI, including development of the annual budget, routine monitoring and reporting on finances and budget, and overseeing and ensuring filing of tax returns and other financial and legal documents required to maintain CRSI’s legal and financial status.
Develop and implement plans to expand CRSI’s membership base, including development of a clear value proposition for membership, especially one demonstrating the impact of CRSI promotion programs on decision makers.
Provide necessary leadership and support to staff and committee chairs to insure that committee work meets expectations, as well as oversee the strategic planning process.
Serve as the principal spokesperson for the Institute with responsibility for the Institute’s public relations program as well as its relationships with other associations, industry, government, and public and private service organizations.
Plan annual spring membership convention and annual fall meeting.
Serve as President of the CRSI Education and Research Foundation.
Desired Qualifications, Skills and Qualities
A bachelor’s degree is required; engineering and marketing disciplines preferred.
Excellent oral and written communication skills and able to make quality presentations to both large and small groups.
Understanding of and ability to implement and use modern electronic communications venues, including social media.
Leadership, especially as demonstrated in team development and oversight, Board governance and in representing CRSI with other organizations and stakeholders.
The ability to maintain and develop cordial professional relations with Institute members, stakeholders, other associations and professional societies, as well as co-workers.
Direct experience and recognized expertise in construction and related fields as is association management experience.
Development and implementation of product promotion and marketing programs.
