The International Foodservice Distributors Association (IFDA) is looking for an innovative storyteller to lead communications for a $300 Billion industry. This is an exciting new role for our association that has been created to develop our external communication strategy. As IFDA’s Director of Communications, you will:
Create and communicate an industry narrative;
Elevate the industry reputation and thought leadership position among key stakeholders (Washington regulators/legislators, trading partners, advocacy groups, and restaurant leaders);
Creatively promote association programs and events; and
Work collaboratively with staff members and industry leaders to energize and excite our membership to deepen engagement and advocacy for the association and industry issues.
A primary objective will be determining the best means to tell the story of an industry that makes eating out possible every day. You will collaborate across the association to understand key communications opportunities, put a plan in place, and execute on that plan. We also need you to create member communications about association activities through social media as an extension of event marketing and develop resources to help our members be successful with their own communications. It’s strategic, but also very hands-on. And since it is a new position, you have the ability to make it your own. You’ll have the opportunity to develop your own systems and processes to improve association communications to our members and the general public.
We are looking for someone who has proven experience with communications (media relations, social media, digital promotion of programs, storytelling, thought leadership), preferably with a trade association, or at an agency that works with trade associations. Strong media relationships, or the ability to form them, are important capabilities, as we seek to improve our share of voice on key issues. Prior experience with foodservice or food-related associations is a plus. Journalism experience with public media, trade, or digital press is helpful, but not a deal breaker.
Here are the success stories that will make you stand out:
Demonstrated leadership and management abilities;
Ability to develop and implement integrated communications campaigns (print, digital, social, promotional events) that achieve business results;
Innovative approaches to promoting trade association programs and events to various audiences;
A natural storyteller who can understand complex subjects, their different angles, and how to communicate them in an effective way for different audiences;
Ability to wear many hats, juggle competing priorities, and achieve objectives.
We’re a small team, but a leading trade association. To fit in with our team, you need good interpersonal skills, the ability to build consensus, and a willingness to work across all disciplines. We are all very invested in our members and the programs, services and solutions we develop to benefit our members and their people. You will have significant interaction with IFDA members and other trading partners, and must be willing to travel (up to 15%).
A bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, journalism or related field is required. We are also looking for 7+ years of communications experience with a strong track record of public relations wins and increasing responsibility. Accreditation or membership with a communication organization (IABC, PRSA) would be viewed positively. It is important that you have the ability to use this knowledge to tell our industry story.
If this sounds like you, then please forward a cover letter and resume to email@example.com. No phone calls please. If it’s not for you, but sounds like someone you know, then share this post!
