The National Cooperative Business Association CLUSA International (NCBA CLUSA) is seeking a dynamic and experienced leader to join the company as President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The President and CEO will work closely with the Board of Directors, serving as the managing director of corporate operations and overseeing all integrated program and operational activities. The ideal candidate for this position has previous corporate management and cooperative development experience and a proven track record for effective team management and results-driven leadership. Experience working in a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) with strong experience in donor-funded projects from both government and foundations sources is preferred.
The President and CEO is responsible for the strategic leadership and direction of NCBA CLUSA to ensure its continued relevance, credibility, and viability. The President and CEO represents NCBA CLUSA in the United States and internationally, by developing and promoting relationships and alliances with cooperative organizations, businesses, governments and governmental agencies, media and the general public. In collaboration with the Board of Directors, the incumbent establishes strategic organizational goals and priorities and reviews, analyzes and evaluates the progress and works to attain the objectives and performance goals. He/She directs the senior leadership team in planning, managing, organizing and allocating the resources of the organization.
ESSENTIAL AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Plans, defines, implements, and achieves the Board of Directors’ mission, objectives and goals by providing strong and effective leadership to the senior management team, and establishes expectations for acceptable levels of performance for the organization and methods for measuring such performance.
Provides effective leadership in the development of standards and procedures to efficiently and effectively utilize NCBA CLUSA’s resources.
Builds a strong visionary organizational mission for NCBA CLUSA to retain and increase membership and integrate and align program activities conducted domestically and internationally.
Develops and implements a strategy to successfully engage and partner with the diverse domestic cooperative sectors and stakeholders.
Works closely with the Chief Financial Officer to protect and strengthen the financial position of the organization and directs the planning and development of the annual operating and capital budgets for Board of Directors’ approval. Also, develops and implements strategies to secure alternative sources of revenue.
Monitors all financial and operational risks to the organization, and takes the appropriate mitigating action necessary to ensure risks remain within acceptable levels.
Develops and implements an attainable plan to strengthen the cooperative development brand and value.
Engages the cooperative sectors domestically by leveraging the members to build strong coalitions. Also, develops and implements an effective business strategy to build and sustain an integrated programs portfolio both domestically and internationally.
In collaboration with the Board of Directors, develops and maintains an ongoing strategic plan for NCBA CLUSA to efficiently use its financial and human resources in serving the membership and expand its global operations.
Represents NCBA CLUSA as required, including attendance at important functions, industry events and public meetings.
Accepts leadership roles in organizations such as the Cooperative Development Foundation (CDF), the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA), Cooperative Business International (CBI), Overseas Cooperative Development Council (OCDC), USAID, etc.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
Advanced degree in Business or related field and 10 years or more of related work experience in cooperative development, administration and management with at least 5 years in a senior management level role. Experience working in a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) with strong experience in managing donor-funded projects from both U.S. government (USAID and USDA) and foundations preferred.
Proven experience in functioning as a catalyst and partner in working collaboratively with a Board of Directors to assure proper alignment between the governance and management functions of the organization.
Superior leadership skills to engage employees, members, and other key stakeholders to accomplish the organization’s strategic vision and tactical goals. Also, demonstrated strong capacity to lead and manage talent from senior managers to entry level employees through recruitment, development, setting expectations, and holding employees accountable in a timely and effective manner.
Strong business acumen and fiduciary skills with a keen knowledge and understanding of financial and budget management.
Established track record of ensuring strong operational performance through effective decision-making, delivering reliable results, and measuring the organization’s performance using quantitative and qualitative metrics.
Proven ability to identify and secure alternative sources of revenue.
Strong crisis management skills and strong ability to lead change management in an effective manner to achieve organizational outcomes.
Superior communication and presentation skills and comfort as a highly visible public spokesperson.
Effective interpersonal and professional relationship building skills and an ability to provide strategic leadership and advice to senior leadership, exchange information and collaborate with colleagues and peers within and outside the organization.
Must be able to read, write and speak fluent English.
