The next Executive Director of the Virginia Council for Private Education (VCPE) will have the opportunity to advance quality education in private schools in Virginia through ensuring that accrediting agencies follow solid review processes and through advocacy on behalf of private schools. The Executive Director will be the primary spokesperson serving as the “voice for private education.” He or she will work with VCPE’s Board to ensure the highest standards in accreditation and to represent private schools in legislative matters.
VCPE’s mission is to advance excellence in private education through accreditation and advocacy.
VCPE was organized originally as the Virginia affiliate of the Council for American Private Education (CAPE). In 2000 Virginia’s General Assembly granted oversight of nonpublic school accreditation to VCPE in §22.1-19 of the Code of Virginia. VCPE maintains a long-standing relationship with the Virginia Board of Education (VBOE).
VCPE is the:
•Umbrella association representing Virginia’s private preschool, elementary, and secondary schools in the Commonwealth. •Accountability system for private schools, recognized by the Virginia Board of Education to oversee the accreditation of private elementary and secondary schools in Virginia. •Principal resource for public information on private schools for the Virginia Departments of Education, Social Services, and Health, as well as the public school divisions and other professional educational organizations and agencies, various news media, and businesses offering programs of interest to private schools. •Voice of private schools at the General Assembly. VCPE is often consulted in matters concerning regulatory and/or code changes to support private education, and VCPE collaborates on national efforts initiated by CAPE.
This is a full-time position. The Executive Director will:
•Manage the day-to-day operations of VCPE •Oversee and improve the processes involved in accrediting Virginia’s accrediting agencies. •Build strong relationships with the Board, accrediting agencies, private schools, and elected officials. •Help to build consensus around responses to issues that have an impact on private schools. •Communicate the value that VCPE brings to private schools. •Raise funds to supplement the current budget.
Hours may be irregular at certain times of the year, such as during the General Assembly.
Skills and Qualifications
Successful candidates will:
•Possess excellent communication and organizational skills. •Have an understanding of private schools and the accreditation process. •Be able to build strong relationships and consensus on key issues. •Be familiar with state and national education policies. •Responsible for the development and execution of the budget. •Reside in Virginia with willingness to travel. VCPE’s office is in Richmond and most of the business is conducted in Richmond.
